Best Overall Bar St. Paul
Summit Hill – St. Paul
While St. Paul has some great bars, just like Minneapolis, Sweeney’s just has something about it, you know one of those intangible feelings you can’t quite put your finger on but keep coming back for. If you’re looking for a great locals only bar look no further. One of my favorite things about Sweeney’s is its mishmash of customers. You get a good mixing of the crowds here, and the vibe is seemingly always a positive buzz, almost like a non-stop happy hour (even though obviously it’s not actually a non-stop happy hour). This bar is like a liquid memory you can drink and enjoy time after time. Much of what is great about this bar is intangible, so to understand why I give it such high praise I’d recommend you just go give it a shot.
This is my bar of choice for meeting an old friend for a few beers and a basket of fries. The people are always friendly, the bartenders knowledgeable and genuine, and the vibes are second to none. They have half their taps which are staples that are always there for your drinking pleasure and a second half that rotates every few weeks so there is always something new and delicious to refresh yourself with. The bartenders and Sweeney’s are always up for a challenge, they even have a mystery shot! I tend to make their lives a little harder by telling them what I like then saying “surprise me”, and I have yet to have a concoction I disliked.
Their food is simple but delicious. My personal favorite is their mushroom pesto burger and I usually pait that with a basket of Sweeney’s golden crispy fries. Their various flavors of wings are delicious as well. Another fun part of this bar is that in the summertime they open up their quaint little patio in the back of the bar, featuring an outdoor bar, a TV or two, and the most fairy-tale-esq feel. I can’t imagine a better place to be on a warm mid-summer night. For that this is my best bar in St. Paul.
